Crews
chicago-BASED graphic design by Julia crews
Julia Crews is a Chicago-based graphic designer, illustrator, and mixed media artist. Their use of typography and bold color palettes punctuates their signature style. Julia believes designs are metaphors, making the abstract concrete and mystifying the mundane.
typography reimagined
A deck of playing cards I designed. I was given the freedom to create any folded piece of my choosing. I chose to do a stack of playing cards with a corresponding box. I did a type treatment and utilized positive and negative space to create card designs that corresponded to their prospective suites.
characters and glyphs
A saddle stitch booklet. I was assigned to create a booklet based on sections from a typography textbook. I chose to do the section covering characters and glyphs. I wanted to create a busy design, as I find characters and glyphs, especially glyphs, are often flamboyant and decorative.
how to brochure
An oyster fold I made. I was instructed to make a folded piece that demonstrated a “how-to” of my choosing. I wanted a nonsensical design, so I devised a how-to for becoming a zombie. I created inserts based on warning and caution posters and designed graphics that best demonstrated a government document's clinical and official feel.
Page design
A pinwheel twist fold I designed. I was assigned to create a folded piece based on an essential element of typography. I chose page design as my topic and design basis. When unfolding, the design changes and creates a new layout. The definitions correspond with the design (i.e., symmetry is surrounded by aa symmetrical layout/design, etc.).
